Baird’s Sandpipers
The bird from our watershed for August is the Baird's Sandpiper. Baird’s Sandpipers are only found in Central California during August and September. They need shallow water and mudflats on which to feed during the amazingly long migration. While most migrate through the American Midwest on their way between breeding grounds on the far-northern tundra of Alaska and Canada and their wintering grounds in southern South America, a small number fly south through the Pacific Flyway and visit Central California on the way.
