Long-Billed Dowitcher

The bird from our watershed for July is the long-billed dowticher. During February - May, long-billed dowitchers migrate to northern Alaska and Canada for breeding. Though hard to imagine our watershed as “winter” in July, the adults have returned to our watershed as their “winter” grounds and the juveniles follow in September-October. They rely on shallow water and mudflats in which they probe for invertebrates.
